  • Software Usage Guidelines

Using software in our  work is essential for most of us and we are becoming even more dependant on it's use.  While software is a great asset, many times using it can be more problematic than the problem it is trying to solve.  To maximise the benefit of using software I have been trying to think of five general guidelines.  This is my list:

  • Voltage Level Confusion

I was having a conversation the other day about voltage levels.  While everyone was in agreement that low voltage was 1000 V and less, there was more confusion on the terms 'Medium Voltage' and 'High Voltage'.   Our attempt to resolve this was to look at IEC60038 "Standard Voltages", 20002.  This didn't help in that the standard does not define the terms 'Low Voltage', 'Medium Voltage', etc.  However, what the standard does do is group voltages into bands and this is useful.

  • Magicians of Engineering

The other day I was reading 'Night of the New Magicians' by Mary Pope Osborn with my son.  The story is about a young boy and girl who travel back in time to the 1889 World's Fair in Paris to find four  new magicians and learn their secrets.  The new magicians turn out to be Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas  Edison, Louis Pasteur and Gustave Eiffel and their secrets inspiration advice.

  • Three Phase Current - Simple Calculation

The calculation of current in a three phase system has been brought up on our forums and is a discussion I seem to get involved in every now and again.  While some colleagues prefer to remember formulas or factors, my approach is to do resolve the problem step by step using basic principles.  I thought it would be good to write this down in case it may prove useful to someone else.
