Dear All,

I am working in LV panel manufacturing co upto 6000A switchboard. We have conducted type tests for short circuit (50 kA), temperature rise(45 deg above ambient 40 eg) and IP 54 protection from CPRI-India. These tests were carried out without switch gear and interconnections. I have come to know as per IEC60439 this is PTTA. But the switchgear used are fully type tested. Please advice whether we really need to carry out type tests along with switchgear i.e for the whole panel along with busbars, circuit breakers and associated meters and relays.

Please anyone guide me.

Dear Shanbhag

This is a very interesting question, and not easy to answer in a few paragraphs. There are also some issues with what you have been claiming regarding your existing 60439 testing. You have not got a PTTA, you have performed selected tests on an incomplete assembly, the incorporation of the devices (ACB, MCCB, or fuse switches) should be included within the assembly (test panel) these have an impact on the overall performance in all of the tests performed, and unfortunately the impact is normally a negative one.

We offer training and support to panel builders worldwide, please visit our website www.3phasedesign.com or feel free to contact me and we can arrange to provide you support to cover your existing offer, and how to make best the results that you will have gained through your testing.

One further point regarding your question, the new IEC61439 requires testing as well as verification that every panel you build meets the same construction as your tested arrangement.

I hope this gives you some information and look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Best regards

Dear Mr. Rob Swann Sir,

Than you so much for the information. You are very much right.  There is lot of confusion and misconception regarding the type tests and routine tests to be conducted on metal enclosed switch gear assembly here in Bangalore. Normally, most panel builders here conduct  type test for SC, IP, temp rise for 1 sample and extrapolate and estimate the result for other panels. But i feel that , The tests mentioned in IEC are designed for panels which are used in very harsh conditions.  just 1 doubt, Sir.. If the panels are used in less harsh conditions.. say.. ambient temperature is 30 degrees(normal), the panels are installed in dust free(nearly), indoor room and the short circuit level in system is low.. then still do we have to conduct the tests along with the switch gear.

I have a confusion.. Don"t we really have to look in to the specific application need before we get convinced that we have to conduct the tests as asked in IEC.

Please guide me. Thank you Sir for the website info.
